International film star and Road Safety Goodwill Ambassador Michelle Yeoh arrived in the country Tuesday to promote road safety in the Philippines.

Yeoh planed in from Europe aboard a Cathay Pacific flight from Hong Kong.

The Automobile Association of the Philippines (AAP) which is celebrating its 79th year partnered with the FIA Foundation and Asian Development Bank and invited Yeoh to the Philippines to promote the Global Helmet Vaccine Initiative (GHVI) for motorcycle riders.

The motorcycle is one of the most popular means of transportation in Asia. Figures released by the World Health Organization (WHO) show that at least 1.2 million people between the ages of 15-45 are killed in motorcycle-related accidents annually.

The use of safety helmets is seen by the international community as the best way of preventing road injuries.

Yeoh’s visit will be highlighted by the turnover of 1,000 safety helmets to schoolchildren who ride tandem with their parents aboard motorcycles.

The visit of the actress is expected to increase the awareness on the use of helmets in the country.

The distribution of the safety helmets will be held today, May 26, at the Asian Development Bank in Pasig City. The Road Safety Ambassador will be the guest speaker at the ADB, which is co-launching the GHVI in the country.

Yeoh is a well known actress starring in hit movies that include James Bond movie Tomorrow Never Dies, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Memoirs of a Geisha, Sunshine, Mummy 3, and Babylon AD.
