Improving road safety in requires a multi-faceted approach. In addition to revising traffic safety legislation and direct intervention through providing access to effective safety equipment, education is also essential to make a tangible impact. Recognizing this, the AIP Foundation designed and produced a comprehensive Traffic Safety Education curriculum for the primary school system of.
The objectives of the curriculum are to ensure children have a conceptual understanding to observe safe behavior in their daily activities and travel, have an understanding of traffic laws and transportation systems, and develop skills and attitudes that will form safe and responsible behavior as they mature into adults driving motorbikes.
To meet these objectives, the AIP Foundation collaborated with the Ministry of Education and Training (MoET), local teachers, and foreign education experts to design full-color student books and teacher manuals for grades 1-5, which address road safety and awareness, bicycle safety, and the recognition of traffic lights and signs. Informative materials are provided to parents to reinforce the importance of traffic safety. Color posters, traffic lights, and street models have been produced for placement in the classroom to make the learning environment more interactive.
Traffic corners are built at each school providing a realistic setting for practical learning and training. The curriculum was originally piloted in 18 schools in 4 cities reaching approximately 30,000 students and is now being expanded nation-wide. 750 teachers have received intensive training in traffic safety education; class materials have also been distributed to another 900 schools around the country, benefiting an estimated 900,000 children.
Positive evaluation led the MoET to recognize the curriculum as Official Teaching Material for the primary school system. With funding primary from the AIP Foundation and our two long-term partners, Vietnam Suzuki and BP, the program has been expanded to hundreds of primary schools and over 100,000 students nationwide. However, there are over 10 million primary school students in Vietnam. More help is needed to meet the demand for this program.
