Why we do it
Facts about Road Safety
Road traffic crashes are among the world’s largest public health issues. The problem is all the more severe because the majority of victims (and fatalities) are young and often also the breadwinners for their families.
- Road crashes are the biggest killer of young people in Europe and the US
- Globally, more than 40% of all road traffic deaths occur among the 0 to 25 age group
- By the year 2030, road traffic injuries are predicted to be the fifth leading cause of death worldwide
- Road traffic crashes are predictable and can be prevented
Road Safety in Southeast Asia
Road traffic accidents claim tens of thousands of lives, cause hundreds of thousands of head injuries, and cost hundreds of millions of dollars each year in Vietnam and Southeast Asia. We are dedicated to stopping this hidden epidemic and mitigating the social and economic costs of road traffic accidents in poor countries.
- In Southeast Asia traffic victims fill 20 to 30 percent of all hospital beds
- For many low- and middle-income countries, the cost of road crashes represents between 1-1.5% of GNP and in some cases exceeds the total amount they receive in international development aid
- Most of those killed or injured in developing countries are pedestrians
- Research in India and Bangladesh shows that 50% of families that lost a member in a road crash subsequently fell below the poverty line
